How to Get Rid of Rats: The 5-Step Plan That Works

This is the same sequence professionals bill hundreds for: confirm, cut off food, trap hard, seal, clean. Skip a step and rats come back; run all five and they don't.

Step 1 — Confirm what you have and where it moves

First, make sure it's rats and not mice — trap sizing depends on it (30-second ID guide). Then map activity: droppings (rat droppings are ½–¾″, blunt for Norway, pointed for roof rats), rub marks (greasy smears along walls and beams), gnawing (fresh gnaw is pale; old is dark), and noise (scratching at dusk and dawn). Mark every location — those are your trap sites.

Step 2 — Cut off food and water tonight

All food — including pet food and birdseed — into glass, metal, or heavy plastic containers.
Pet bowls up overnight. Fix dripping taps; rats need water daily.
Garbage in bins with tight lids, indoors and out. Wipe up crumbs and grease nightly for the trapping period.

A hungry rat is a trappable rat. This step is why identical traps work in one house and fail next door.

Step 3 — Trap hard, all at once

Placement: every marked activity site, traps perpendicular to walls, trigger to the wall, every 10–15 feet on runways.
Pre-bait unset for 2–3 nights with pea-sized high-aroma bait, then arm every trap the same evening.
Check daily. Remove catches promptly (gloves, sealed bag, outdoor bin), re-bait, reset in place.
Adapt weekly: no catches at a site in 5–7 days → move the trap or rotate bait.

Skip DIY poison indoors. Poisoned rats die inside walls — the smell lasts weeks and the carcass draws flies — and rodenticides are a leading killer of owls, hawks, and pets via secondary poisoning. Traps give you confirmed, removable kills.

Step 4 — Seal the building (after catches slow)

Rats enter through anything over ½″ — a gap the width of your thumb. Walk the exterior at ground level and roofline:

Fill gaps around pipes, cables, and vents with copper mesh or steel wool backed with gnaw-resistant sealant — foam alone is a snack, not a barrier.
Screen vents (crawlspace, gable, dryer) with ¼″ hardware cloth.
Door sweeps on garage and exterior doors with visible daylight gaps.
Roofline: trim branches 4+ feet off the roof, cap chimneys, seal eave gaps — roof rats enter high (attic guide).

Sealing before trapping traps rats inside; sealing after trapping locks the problem out. Order matters.

Step 5 — Clean up safely

Rodent droppings and urine can carry pathogens, so never dry-sweep or vacuum them. Ventilate the space 30 minutes, spray droppings and nests wet with a bleach solution (1 part bleach : 10 parts water), let sit 5 minutes, wipe up with paper towels into sealed bags, then wash hands and launder clothes. Gloves and a mask throughout. Heavy attic contamination is a fair reason to hire a cleanup crew.

The timeline to expect

Days 1–3: sanitation + pre-baiting. Days 3–10: peak catches. Weeks 2–3: catches taper; move cold traps. Zero sign for 7–10 days: final seal-up and cleanup. Still catching at week 4? Something's refilling the house — re-walk the exterior or bring in a pro for the exclusion work.
