Poison looks like the easy option: toss out some bait blocks, let chemistry do the work. In practice, DIY rodenticide creates problems that traps simply don't have — carcasses in wall voids, poisoned pets and owls, and a kill you can never verify. Here's the honest comparison, including the few situations where poison genuinely earns its place.
How rodenticides actually work
Most consumer rat poisons are anticoagulants. The rat eats the bait, its blood loses the ability to clot, and it dies of internal bleeding over the following 3–7 days. The delay is deliberate — rats are suspicious of new food, and a bait that killed quickly would teach the survivors to avoid it. First-generation anticoagulants need repeated feedings; second-generation compounds can kill from a single feed but persist far longer in the rat's tissues, which matters enormously for what eats the rat next.
The other family is acute toxicants — bromethalin (nervous system) and cholecalciferol (calcium overload). They act faster, but bromethalin has no antidote, which is exactly what you don't want in a product that dogs find edible.
The four problems with DIY poison
1. The rat dies where you can't reach it
A poisoned rat doesn't walk outside to die conveniently. It gets weak and retreats to where it feels safe — its nest, which is often inside your wall, attic insulation, or under the floor. The result is a decomposition smell that lasts two to four weeks, flies, and sometimes a drywall repair to remove the carcass.
