Rat-Proofing Your Home: The Exclusion Checklist
Trapping ends an infestation. Exclusion ends the sequel. This is the full walkthrough — roofline to foundation — with the materials that actually stop gnawing, the gap sizes that matter, and a realistic weekend work plan.
The ½″ rule
An adult rat squeezes through any opening bigger than ½″ — roughly the width of your thumb. A mouse only needs ¼″. Since most homes with rats also get mice eventually, seal everything to the ¼″ standard and you solve both problems in one pass.
One thing before you pick up a caulk gun: order matters. Seal a building while rats are still active inside and you lock them in with you — they'll chew new exits, die in walls, or turn up in living spaces. Materials ranked: what stops a rat and what doesn't
Rats gnaw through wood, plastic, vinyl, rubber, aluminum flashing, and cured expanding foam. They cannot chew through properly fastened steel mesh, sheet metal, or masonry. Rank your shopping list accordingly:

Exterior walkthrough: five zones
Walk the building twice — once at ground level, once looking up at the roofline with binoculars or from a ladder. Bring a flashlight, chalk to mark finds, and your thumb as a gauge.
Zone 1 — Roofline
- Gaps where fascia meets roof deck, and at soffit corners — the classic roof rat entry (attic guide).
- Uncapped chimneys and unscreened gable, ridge, and bathroom vents — cover with ¼″ hardware cloth.
- Tree branches within 4 feet of the roof: trim them. Rats jump that far and run wires and fences like sidewalks.
Zone 2 — Walls
- Weep holes in brick veneer: cover with purpose-made weep covers or mesh — never mortar them shut, they're there for drainage.
- Gaps behind fascia boards, at siding corners, and where additions meet the original structure.
- Old satellite dish, cable, and AC penetrations that were never sealed.
Zone 3 — Foundation and ground level
- Cracks over ¼″ and gaps under the sill plate: mortar or concrete patch.
- Crawlspace vents and access doors: intact ¼″ screening, snug-fitting doors.
- Burrow holes against the foundation (a fresh burrow is a 2–4″ hole with a fan of loose soil) mean Norway rats — ground-level entry is their specialty, so this zone gets extra time.
Zone 4 — Doors
- Daylight under any exterior door means rodents fit. Fit door sweeps on people doors and a new bottom seal on the garage door.
- Garage door corners are the single most common entry on many houses — the rubber seal gets chewed at the corners. Metal corner guards over sheet-metal backing fix it for good.
Zone 5 — Utilities
- Every pipe, conduit, and cable entering the building: stuff the annular gap with copper mesh, cap with sealant.
- Dryer vents: rodent-proof flap or screened cover (check lint flow monthly — a clogged screen is a fire risk).
- Where the sewer lateral is old and broken, rats can enter through plumbing. Repeated toilet or drain sightings justify a plumber's camera inspection.
Interior chokepoints
You can't always find the exterior entry on day one. Sealing interior chokepoints at least keeps rats out of living space while you hunt: pipe gaps under kitchen and bathroom sinks, the void behind the stove and dishwasher, gaps around radiator and drain penetrations, and unsealed holes in the basement ceiling. When to do this work
The whole exterior pass is a realistic weekend for an average single-family house: half a day walking and marking, a day of sealing. If you only do it once a year, do it in early fall — when night temperatures drop, outdoor rats start probing buildings, and every gap you closed in September is an invasion that never happened.
Verify your work
Sealing without verification is guessing. Two checks:
- Flour test: dust a light band of flour at former entry points and along suspected runways. Check for tracks over 2–3 nights. Clean flour means a closed door.
- Keep a few traps working: leave 2–4 snap traps in the attic, garage, and basement for two weeks after sealing. Zero catches confirms the job; a fresh catch means you missed a gap.
Maintenance schedule
- Twice a year (spring and early fall): re-walk all five zones. Sealant shrinks, screens rust, door seals wear.
- After any contractor visit: roofers, plumbers, and cable installers routinely leave new penetrations unsealed.
- After storms: check the roofline for lifted flashing and new fascia gaps.
Exclusion is the least glamorous part of rat control and the highest-value one. Traps you'll buy more than once; a properly screwed-down piece of hardware cloth works for a decade.
FAQ
What size hole can a rat fit through?
An adult rat fits through any gap larger than about ½″ — the width of an adult thumb. Young rats and mice fit through ¼″. Seal everything to the ¼″ standard and you exclude both species in one pass.
Can rats chew through steel or concrete?
Not through properly installed 19-gauge hardware cloth, sheet metal, or sound concrete. They can gnaw through wood, plastic, rubber, aluminum flashing, cured expanding foam, and crumbling mortar — which is why foam-only and caulk-only repairs fail within weeks.
Should I seal my house before or after trapping?
After. Sealing first traps active rats inside the structure, where they chew new exits or die in wall voids. Trap hard first, and start exclusion work once catches taper off — the sequence is laid out in the master plan.
Does expanding foam keep rats out?
No. Rats chew through cured foam easily. Foam is acceptable only as a weatherproofing layer over a real barrier — copper mesh packed tight or hardware cloth screwed in place. The metal stops the rat; the foam just stops the draft.
How do I know if my sealing worked?
Dust former entry points with a light band of flour and check for tracks over 2–3 nights, and leave a few baited traps running in the attic, garage, and basement for two weeks. No tracks and no catches means the building is closed.
